Dagala Thousand Lakes

Dagala mountain range divides two prominent valleys of Thimphu and Wangdi Phodrang. The altitude of this plateau is around 4000 meters. This Trek passes by picturesque lakes, Alpine meadows, abundant wildlife and many yak herders’ camps set to a backdrop of magnificent mountainous landscapes. The centre-piece of this communion with nature is worth exploring the high altitude lakes with trout and mystical history. It is a moderate trek with mostly short trekking days but includes a few steep climbs. This trek is a great option for those with a desire to experience the variety of flora and fauna in Bhutan and to capture the glimpse of local nomadic lifestyle. The plateau is also a grazing ground for yaks in summer.

Day 01: Arrive Paro

Guests will be received at Paro Airport by our tour guide from TLB Travels & Tours and transferr to hotel in Paro. On an early arrival guests can visit National Museum and Paro Dzong in the afternoon. Overnight stay will be in hotel.

Day 02: Paro – Thimphu

Take breakfast and drive to Thimphu and lunch will be served in hotel at Thimphu. In the afternoon visit Memorial Chorten, Nunnery, Handicraft Emporium and evening at leisure. Overnight stay in hotel.

Day 03: Thimphu-Genekha

Early morning guests will be driven till Genekha Village which is 40kms away from Thimphu and your trek begins from there. Overnight stay will be in Camp at Genekha beside the river bank. Genekha is famous for Matsutake mushroom. During its season (August -September) it is possible to get the fresh Matsutake to buy from the villagers. Overnight stay in camp at an altitude of 8500ft.

Day 04: Genekha – Labatama

The trek route is all the way up till we reach the highest point of the day Pagalaptsa of alt. 4,170M. From here we can see view of whole Himalayan ranges and from here hike down for about two hours besides the Yak herder’s camp to your reach the campsite. Overnight in the camp at an altitude of 3800ft.

Day 05: Labatama

A day’s halt at this place is necessary to visit many lakes around the place. Setso is the closest lake which takes only fifteen minutes walk. The rest of the lakes are further away and can be easily covered in a day’s excursion. Once you get on the top of the pass you can have the spectacular view of the surrounding mountains on a clear weather. A visit to the island peak of Amo Jomo is reccomended. Overnight stay in camp.

Day 06: Labatam – Jadula

From here the trail becomes a gradual climb of 2-3 hours to reach the Jomigue pass of alt. 4,460M. From this pass some of the mountains of northern Bhutan can be seen and then descend for about two hours to reach Jadula. Overnight stay in camp of altitude 12000ft.

Day 07: Jadula – Japhuna

The trail from Jadula takes about 1-2 hours across the rhododendron bushes uphill till the valley. After the lunch another hour or so will reach to the camp site at Japhuna meaning a “rock cave” at an altitude of 3,800M. The whole stretch journey takes about 5-6 hours and overnight stay will be in the camp.

Day 08: Japhuna – Talakha

The trail from Japhuna continues the gradual climb upto Jeleze La Pass of alt. 4,000M. On a clear day you can get the good view of Jou Dake Gang, Jhomolhari, Jichu Drake, Gangchen Tak, Masangang. After 2-3 hours of gradual descend through the thick forest of blue pine and evergreen oak tree will reach you at Talekha monastery at the altitude of 2,925M. Overnight stay in camp.

Day 09: Talakha – Thimphu

The trek route from Talekha is downhill through the blue pine and evergreen oak trees till Semtokha Dzong.  Transport vehicle awaits your arrival and then drive to Thimphu for overnight stay in hotel.

Day 10: Thimphu- Paro Airport for Departure
